The iPad is like a very bright child. When it’s good it’s good. When it isn’t, it’s very annoying.

Turn the iPad On and Off

The iPad has three basic states.

  • Off.
    • This is totally off.
    • It’s using no battery.
    • The screen is back.
    • Hold the silver button in the top right to turn it on/off.
  • Sleep.
    • This is partially off.
    • It’s using battery, it’s on, it’s in a lower power state.
    • The screen is black.
    • Press the black button (home) in the bottom center to wake it up.
  • On.
    • This is on.
    • The screen has content on it.

Workflow: If the screen is black, try to wake it up first. If it doesn’t wake up, then turn it on.

Close Safari Tabs

  1. Tap the tab to activate it.
  2. Tap the x to delete it.
  3. Repeat for every open tab.

Access Email

Everyone accesses email through an “email client.” Email clients are either “web clients” or “native clients.” On the iPad, you access the web client through SAFARI, and you access the native client through the Mail App.

While opinions vary, I advocate using the web program (web client) not the inbuilt program (native client) to access email. This avoids email synchronization nightmares.

Web Email Client Smile iPad Native Email Client Sad smile
+ This method works on any device. - This method only works on the iPad.
+ There is no need for synchronization. - You run into synchronization nightmares.
(e.g.
“I thought I deleted that email.”
)
- Adding email attachments takes more steps. + Adding email attachments is easier.
(e.g. “I want to email a photo to my friend.”)
