How do I access the special German characters on my keyboard?
Notebook Sony VGN-NW235D VAIO with Windows 7
Steps
Turn on Canadian French
- Open the language bar. This is usually on the taskbar in the lower right corner as a mini keyboard. If you don't see it, click on the little upward pointing arrow to see hidden icons. If it's still not there, go to Start > Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Change the keyboards or other input methods > Change keyboards > Language Bar > Select "Docked in the taskbar" > OK. Now the keyboard will be docked in the taskbar.
- Choose Canadian French. There are other keyboard layouts with which you can experiment. The examples below are for Canadian French.
- Turn off autocorrect in MS Word. Go to File > Word Options > Proofing > Autocorrect Options > Unselect "Replace text as you type." This is probably necessary when you're computer is NOT set in a French locale.
- Switch back to US when you're done. There might be another way to turn of the Alt Car but we didn't find it yet.
Use Alt Car Key Combinations
